Several community members, family of fallen officers and law enforcement personal gathered at Civic Center Park for a candlelight vigil at the Fallen Officer Memorial.

Members from the Buchanan County Sheriff's office, Saint Joseph Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol paid tribute to their fellow fallen officers.

Those in attendance were asked to hold a candle with a blue flame in remembrance as a rose with blue ribbon was placed in front of each fallen officer's plaque.

"When you call 911 the police officer doesn't know who it is that we are responding to. We come there with full expectation and knowledge that we may loose our lives in the line of duty," Mike Hardin, Fraternal Order of Police president, said. "Many of these officers have done that and many of these officers across our country have done that, and so it's very important that we recognize that selfless act."

Tuesday was National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which honors fallen officers across the country.

National Police Week will also take place this week, running May 13th through May 19th.

Summer-like weather has taken hold and will stick around for the next several days. For tonight, an isolated shower or storm is possible early on but we should dry out overnight. Lows will be mild in the upper 60s.
