Deputies apprehended a prisoner Tuesday after he attempted to escape by jumping into the Ohio River.

Derek Cope, 32, escaped custody during a court transport.

Sheriff Richard K. Jones said deputies were returning inmates after their court appearances when Cope fled.

"Jumping in the river is never a good idea and I think he got lucky. Maybe he was trying to cool off from this heat but he is back in custody where he belongs," Jones said.

Cope is being held for burglary and theft, failure to comply with a court order and contempt of court out of the city of Fairfield.

Officials said additional charges are possible after his escape Tuesday.

Monday we had mostly sunny skies for much of the day across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri until the afternoon when we saw a few clouds move into the area. We will clear out late tonight into tomorrow morning then have lots of sunshine along with hot and humid conditions.
