(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) As part of cutting more than $8 million from next year's budget, the school district is eliminating 106 teaching and staff positions.
The hope is that most or all of those positions will be lost through attrition and administrators say so far there's been around 90 staff who have said they will not return next year due to retirements or resignations.
The deadline to avoid staff terminations is April 15. Administrators say they'll go right up to the deadline before making any decisions.
"We are down to having to place at this particular time 15 remaining teachers," St. Joseph Superintendent Robert Newhart said. "It's been all through attrition and people leaving the district for various reasons, and that's pretty good."
Newhart says there are six elementary positions remaining that need to be cut, and nine secondary staff.
