UPDATE: (KAIR)--An early Friday morning explosion in downtown Atchison leaves damage but no injuries. Atchison Fire Chief Ted Graf told MSC News the explosion, in the 100 block of North 8th Street, occurred around 2:30 Friday morning. At 3:45 Friday morning, Graf said the structure at 120 North 8th Street incurred the most structural damage, but at least minor affects were received by adjacent buildings.

The 120 North 8th Street address is the location of the Hair Spital Barber Shop. Although speculation stemming from the preliminary investigation indicates that an explosive device was the cause of the explosion, Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, as of 10:00 Friday morning, was not ready to confirm that report.

“I'm not prepared yet to describe to you about a device, or the cause of the explosion, but what I will tell you is that this is a criminal investigation, that this was not accidental. We have been collecting evidence throughout the morning, we have bomb dogs here.”

Graf told MSC News the State Fire Marshal was called in to assist with the initial investigation, which led to contacting the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Graf said the preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion originated at the 120 North 8th Street address.

Motorists and pedestrians are to avoid the area, with the intersection at 8th and Main, as well as the entire 100 block of North 8th, remaining closed as the investigation continues.

A strong cold front has pushed through northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. For tonight, we'll see clear skies as overnight lows drop down to the middle 50s. We could wake up to some foggy conditions on Monday morning, but it will be a sunny & nice day for the first day of fall.
