(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A St. Joseph man whose arrest stirred debate after video of his arrest went viral remains behind bars.
Zachary Smith, 31, was arraigned in Buchanan County court Friday on a resisting arrest charge.
He remains in jail with bond set at $10,000.
Video of his arrest posted to Facebook by a witness has been viewed more than 238,000 times.\
It shows officers punching and kneeing Smith.
Police say officers were called out to Central High School on Monday to investigate a suspicious person looking into vehicles.
According to authorities, Smith was arrested after officers determined he had outstanding warrants and believed he was under the influence of methamphetamine.
Smith's mother says he is a schizophrenic and was having a manic episode when he was arrested.
Smith has previously been charged with resisting arrest back in 2014 and 2016.
He will be back in court May 9.
