(LATHROP, Mo.) Painful memories brought back to life after a tornado ripping through homes in a northwest Missouri town. One year ago.
March 6, 2017, a day not forgotten in Lathrop, Missouri, a day an EF-2 tornado left the small community and lives in pieces.
Hundreds of homes were damaged, and more than a dozen families were displaced.
Blair Shock remembers what it looked like a year ago today after a tornado ripped through a rural community along Route J just south of Plattsburgh, he works for Clinton County's Emergency Management Agency.
"The first house we came to is just gone, literally gone, just a foundation," Shock said. ."you start visiting with people and you realize not only are they impacted by it but they no longer have a place to lay their head at night. All of their memories, their entire life is strewn out in this field where their house used to be."
More than a dozen houses were leveled, and hundreds of homes were damaged.
The local Red Cross Emergency Service Director, Karla Long drove to Clinton County the morning after the tornado. She says there was stuff everywhere.
"Some of the roads you couldn't even go down until the debris had been cleared because the tree debris was so intense. you couldn't drive down the road until people got in there with chainsaws to open it up," Long said.
Long has been in the disaster business for 25 years and she says it's always the same, you never think it can happen to you.
"It only takes one time for it to be the real deal and you will be eternally grateful for the lowest place you can get to," Long said.
A lesson this town won't soon forget many of the homes have been rebuilt over the last year.
