Savannah school board listens to public debate regarding mascot

The Savannah R-3 School Board of Education heard from more than 30 people Tuesday night regarding the school's "Savages" mascot.

(SAVANNAH, Mo.) —The Savannah R-3 School Board of Education heard from more than 30 people Tuesday night regarding the school's "Savages" mascot.

For two hours, individuals made their case to change, keep, or find a common ground when it comes to the school's mascot. 

The district used "Savages" for decades and it dates back to the 1930s. 

School board president Stancy Bond said there will not be a decision on the mascot before the start of the next school year.

Thunderstorms moved through the area today, and another round of storms will begin to develop into the evening. These storms have the chance to be strong to severe. The main threats will remain as strong winds and heavy rain, however hail and an isolated tornado can not be ruled out. Storm chances will continue on Friday into Saturday as a front rolls through. Temperatures will be back in the 80s for the weekend into next week with several more scattered rain and thunderstorm chances.
