Robert L. “Bob” Ward
Robert L. “Bob” Ward, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri, died Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Riverside Place, St. Joseph.
He was born July 26, 1929, to Harold Amos and Leta Muriel (La Shelle) Ward in Ottawa, Kansas. Bob graduated from Ottawa High School in 46, then went on to serve in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Following his service, Bob graduated from Ottawa University in 1953.
Bob married Jean Marie Kirkman on June 4, 1954. She survives of the home.
He was the Branch Manager for Home Savings and Loan Association in St. Joseph for 40 years, since 1960. Following his retirement, he worked in home appraisal.
Bob was a 55-year member of Host Lion’s Club. He was also a board member and Lion of the Year. Bob was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. The Lions Club International Foundation is a worldwide organization which recognizes outstanding individuals by bestowing on them an award that is named for its founder, Melvin Jones. This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarians ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. Recipients of this award are models of exemplary service to their club and the community which it serves.
He was recognized with the Girl Scout Award for volunteering at Camp Woodland and being an exemplary Girl Scout parent. Bob was a member of the Buchanan County Republican Club (formerly Northwest Missouri Republican Club), the Buchanan County Jail Board Visitors, the Lovers Lane Association, the Elk’s Club (also known as the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks), the River Bluffs Library Board where he was the treasurer, the St. Joseph City Traffic Commission. He was also an election judge and served his community through Meals on Wheels, eye bank delivery, lightbulb sales, and pancake breakfasts. Bob was a regular blood donor. He loved jazz and big band music.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; children, Debbie Vesel, Shawnee, Kansas, Dana Bruns (Joel), Springfield, Missouri, and Doug Ward (Linda), St. Joseph; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment Memorial Park Mausoleum.
