warning our may see the disturbing and <<michael fleenor never just wasn't possible."i've been around animals all my life, i've never once thought about shooting a dog."he adopted his pit-bull chance more than 10 years ago.fleenor let chance roam around."of anywhere from sleeping with my grandkids or my children as they were growing up to anywhere that we've been where that basically he was an ambassador that i called him for pitbulls because he loved to meet and greet everybody."the pit-bull was rarely on a leash. unfortunately i made the choice a long time ago with my pets that when they are on my property i don't leash them. they run free with me. chance loved to go visit neighbors and kids and stuff. a month ago.. he came home to find chance shot and killed driveway.really, i went numb drive-way like that. it definitely, i still haven't really probably processed it fully and it still time."now he's sharing his story in hopes of helping others. "i wanted people to know, this could probably happen to your family."the shooter was his neighbor's son-in-law visiting form texas. "my dog had never met him before, never seen him before. in the few minutes he crossed paths with him, he shot him." the texas deputy had told police chance ran towards him.. barking and lunging shot the dog in self-defense. when he was done reading, i paused and i told the commander, 'you know i've had that dog for 10 years and never once has he did what you are describing there. never once.' i said, fleenor says he doesn't believe the deputy's story.and he said, 'well he understands, but the statement was taken that way and because the way our law is written there is nothing else that they can do.' but he never believed someone would shoot a dog either."it makes you look at the world a little bit different" he's spent the last month looking -- trying to figure out if there was something he could have done.i wanted people to know, this could your family." and this is what he's figured out a it was naive to trust a stranger with his dog's life. advocates like jennifer lockwood with the shelter say that's why leash laws are so important."jennifer lockwood quote"they are just as much for the animals as the people. "jennifer lockwood quote"now fleenor is taking what he's learned and sharing it.maybe somebody else can learn from my mistake. of how it took place, with him not being on a leash and being around the corner from the house that they don't make the same thing, and their family have to go through the same thing mine did. >> for more information on st. joseph leash laws -- head over to
