ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- As the snow and ice melt and temperatures rise, motorcyclists across Missouri are returning to the roads.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were 2,303 motorcycle crashes in 2025. In Buchanan County, there were 53 motorcycle crashes.

Sgt. Shane Hux said motorcycle crashes are more deadly than car crashes because they don't have the same protection as oppucants.

"That's why's it's imperative, for them to wear a helmet," he said. "That's their number one safety device when it comes to motorcycle operation and safety."

Beyond a helmet, Hux suggested other gear for motorcyclists to wear.

"Reflective clothing is very important and make sure you wear good proper shoes. Boots are the best when it comes to motorcycles and leather protection," he said.

Hux said it's very important for motorists to pay extra attention during this time of year.

"When you come to a stop sign, make sure you come to a complete stop. Look both directions because motorcyclists are very difficult to see," he said. "Whenever you follow them make sure you follow them at a safe distance. Do not crown them, get too close to them or follow them too closely."

Hux offers a few tips to motorcyclists during the riding season.

"Always make sure you obey all traffic laws. They are there for your safety and the safety of the motoring public. Always wear a helmet even though you may not be required in the state of Missouri, that's still your number one safety device," he said. "That's what we recommend. and never operate a motorcycle or any motor vehicle impaired."

Overall, both drivers and riders are urged to stay alert and share the road safely.
