Emery Omon having record breaking season for final ever run with Lafayette High School track and field
(ST. JOSEPH, MO) - We're in the midst of the high school track and field season where it really starts to matter as we're only a few weeks away from the state tournament. One city school athlete has been on a tear this season, breaking records left and right.
In the farewell season for the Lafayette High School track and field team, the Fighting Irish have been making it one to remember. A big part of the team's success has been from the effort and commitment of junior Emery Omon. Omon this season has helped make three Lafayette school records, two individual records in the shot put with 12.47 meters, and the Javelin with 39.69 meters. She's also part of a team record on the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1 minute and 45.33 seconds.
So which record is Omon the most proud of?
"Probably the shot put one because I didn't think that I'd make it to past twelve (meters), but I'm glad I did," said Omon. We didn't really know that was past the record until like a couple of days after, but I was happy."
"She's just really strong and explosive. She's a physical athlete. Coach (Nate) Daugherty does a great job working with throwers. She really likes to be coached hard," said head Lafayette track coach Clint Spencer. "She's taken to that coaching well. What makes her who she is is the fact that she's never happy with where she's at. She's always looking to grow and get better. Who knows where she may end up before it's all said and done."
Omon won the Class 3 District 8 title in the shot put this past Saturday in Chillicothe, getting that 12.47 personal record mark. She finished in the top three in the javelin as she moves on to sectionals in both events this coming weekend in Higginsville. Omon and her Lafayette relay teammates were 0.01 seconds away from a district title in the 4x200. But they'll be moving on to sectionals and we'll look for that state title in that event in a few weeks.
"For our relays, we're doing way better than we thought we would. I didn't think we'd make it this far, but I'm really happy we have," said Omon. "We all work pretty good together. Our handoffs are almost always pretty good, and we're all just fast, so that works."
It's bittersweet for Omon. Her time as a Lafayette High School athlete is quickly coming to a close, but with it being the final season for the Irish, that means the school records she has and still might improve on even more, will stay in the history books forever.
"It's sad, but it feels good that I could do it before (it closes)," said Omon.
"It's pretty cool, and honestly, as good an athlete as she is, (her records) might have stayed forever anyway, several of them," said Spencer. "We're not losing any of the girls on the track team. I would love to have the opportunity to see what they could do with another year. But we're trying to savor every moment of this year and make as many memories as we can."
The Class 3 Sectional 4 Tournament will be in Higginsville on Saturday, May 16th.
