ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri River is expected to rise above flood stage Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall across the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for portions of northwest Missouri and northeastern Kansas, including Buchanan County. River levels near St. Joseph rose rapidly overnight, climbing more than 10 feet over the past two days due to heavy runoff and increased river flow.

Current river levels are nearing 16 feet and are forecast to crest near 20 feet just after midnight Wednesday. Flood stage for the Missouri River at St. Joseph is 17 feet.

Communities along the river are encouraged to closely monitor river forecasts and avoid flooded roadways. Additional rises may still be possible depending on upstream rainfall and runoff conditions.

Officials are reminding drivers to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” and never attempt to drive through flooded roads or around barricades. Residents living near riverbanks or flood-prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.

Flood Warnings remain in effect for portions of Buchanan, Andrew, Doniphan, Boone, Moniteau, Cooper, Howard, Chariton and Saline counties until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
