Tracking multiple chances of rain and thunderstorms

Good morning and happy Thursday.

Temperatures are starting off mild this morning, with readings in the upper 60s to low 70s across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. South winds are helping pull warmer, more humid air into the region ahead of our next storm system.

Most areas will remain dry through the morning hours, although a few isolated showers cannot be ruled out. Cloud cover will gradually increase through the day as showers and thunderstorms develop to our west.

The best chance for rain and thunderstorms arrives this afternoon and evening. Storms are expected to become more widespread after lunchtime and continue through the overnight hours into early Friday morning. While severe weather is not expected to be widespread, periods of heavy rainfall will be possible.

Because of the potential for locally heavy rain, a Flood Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday through Friday morning. Additional rainfall on already saturated ground could lead to flooding of low-lying areas, creeks, streams and roadways.

If you encounter a flooded roadway, remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.

High temperatures today will climb into the mid-80s before thunderstorms develop. Rain chances continue into Friday morning before a break in the action during the afternoon.

Looking ahead, additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through the weekend and into early next week. Many locations could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated higher amounts possible. Temperatures will remain warm in the upper 80s through Saturday before cooling slightly by Sunday.
