Tracking a steamy and stormy weekend, scattered severe risk Friday night

Waterways are running high across Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas after heavy rainfall Thursday night and early Friday morning. A second round of scattered strong storms is possible Friday evening and overnight, potentially aggravating ongoing flooding. Aside from locally heavy rainfall, a few storms may be severe, with damaging winds and hail being the primary threats. A brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out as storms fire mainly across far Northern Missouri between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.. Locations along the Iowa border and parts of southeast Nebraska have the highest threat for severe storms, although an isolated stronger storm could fire south of the Highway-36 corridor. Heat and humidity will also be a theme headed into the weekend, with isolated chances for showers and storms and highs near 90 degrees on Saturday. Higher rain chances will return Sunday and continue into early next week, followed by a stretch of high heat and sunshine in the extended forecast.
