Tracking Wednesday heat and strong thunderstorms this evening

Good morning and happy Wednesday.

As you're heading out the door this morning, temperatures are already warm with readings in the 70s and breezy south winds gusting into the upper 30 mph range. Those strong winds will help temperatures climb back into the low 90s this afternoon.

A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible through the morning hours, but the primary concern arrives later today as a cold front moves through the region.

Due to the increased threat for severe weather, today is a KQ2 Action Alert Day. The entire area is under a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours.

All severe weather hazards are possible, but the primary threats will be large hail and damaging wind gusts. Heavy rainfall could also lead to localized flooding concerns, especially in areas that have received significant rainfall over the past week. While the tornado threat remains low, a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

Storms are expected to develop and intensify through the afternoon before continuing into the evening as the cold front pushes east.

Behind the front, temperatures will cool slightly with highs returning to the mid-80s Thursday and Friday. Additional rain chances remain in the forecast Thursday before drier conditions and sunshine return Friday.

Another round of showers and thunderstorms is possible Saturday, with a few strong storms once again possible.

Be sure to stay weather aware today and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Download the KQ2 Storm Tracker app and stay tuned to KQ2 for the latest forecast updates and severe weather information throughout the day.
