New Downtown St. Joseph sweets shop opens

Palmer's Ice Cream & Desserts

DOWNTOWN ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Last weekend saw the soft opening of a new spot in Downtown St. Joseph for Ice Cream and Desserts.

Palmer's is open and ready to serve hand-scooped ice cream, fresh-baked desserts straight from the oven, melt-in-your-mouth cookies, and signature ice cream swirls, according to its social media.

In addition to offering a wide variety of delicious items for purchase, the shop is proudly dog-themed. With that, they're selling dog toys, various dog treats from creators statewide, and more.

The spot was first teased in April by the Downtown St. Joseph Association's Facebook page.

Palmer's owner and operator is Gabe Palmer, General Manager of his family's pizza place Geneo's, which is right next door to the ice cream shop on Francis Street. The building was purchased by his parents a couple of years ago, and not long after, they began renovating the interior to make it what it would become.

Palmer, who is no stranger to Downtown St. Joseph and to helping grow it, believes the area is stronger than most realize. He believes Palmer's and other new shops that have opened or are about to open show that.

"If you ask any entrepreneur in downtown, they're super excited for what is to come. Obviously, you know, there are negative points; there are times when a couple businesses closed," Palmer said. "But just as fast as they have to shut down. They reopen with someone with new ideas. Someone has a new demographic to hit, something else to bring to get more people downtown. "

Palmer's Ice Cream and Desserts will host an official grand opening celebration on Saturday, June 27.
