ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- To celebrate Juneteenth and kick off a weekend filled with holiday activities, a street race was hosted on Friday at The Bartlett Center.

The races were divided into age groups, and all participants received a medal.  In addition, all runners received goodie bags, drinks and snacks.

Chanae Williams, one of the founders of the race, inspired by her experiences growing up and competing in hometown street races.

“It’s something for us to connect with,” she said. “I ran track in high school; it was a good way for me to bond and build friends. Run away with everything else and give you a little break.”

Justin Thornton hopes participants understand the value of community involvement.

“Just getting kids outside, breathing fresh air, moving around and just inspiring the next generation,” he said.

Thornton said participation carries a meaningful message during the Juneteenth weekend.

“We got a great, loving community. I think Juneteenth is a great yearly tradition, something to gather around and celebrate," he said. "Just encourage everyone out there to spread the word."

The founders hope to make the Juneteenth street race an annual tradition.

Heading into the weekend, The Bartlett Center has numerous types of celebrations it is hosting to celebrate the federal holiday, including a talent show, fashion show, family festival and vendor fair and family picnic.

More information about Juneteenth celebrations over the weekend can be found on the St. Joseph Museums website at stjosephmuseum.org/juneteenth.
