Tracking dangerous heat & dry conditions

Good morning and happy Monday.

We're starting the day with temperatures already in the upper 70s to low 80s, and it will only get hotter as the day goes on. Afternoon highs will climb into the low 90s, while heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees.

Because of the dangerous heat, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through Friday evening. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create hazardous conditions, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.

This hot pattern will continue throughout the workweek, with highs remaining in the low to middle 90s and approaching the upper 90s by the end of the week. Thankfully, the forecast remains mostly dry, with only a slight chance for a few showers and thunderstorms late Saturday into Sunday.

With several days of dangerous heat ahead, it's important to take precautions:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas if you're working or spending time outdoors.
  • Check on older adults, young children, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period.

The hot and humid pattern will remain in place through much of the week, so be prepared for several days of dangerous heat across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.
