KQ2 Sports’ sit down interview with St. Joseph Mustangs pitcher and Lawson alum, Lane Chapman

BRETT KENNEDY: "How is year two with the Mustangs going for you so far?"

LANE CHAPMAN: " Pretty fun. I enjoyed it same as I did last year. Hopefully we can get number 11 this year."

KENNEDY: "What was it like winning a MINK League title with this team last year?"

CHAPMAN: "It was a blast. The celebration at the end was pretty cool and all the guys, I still talk to a lot of them. It's memories that you can't ever get back."

KENNEDY: "What would it mean to win an 11th mink league title, a record-setting mink league title for this team this season?"

CHAPMAN: "I think it'd be special, record-setting and never been done before. I think we have the team to do it. We're starting to finally get our groove back. We started off a little slow, but I think we're finally starting to figure it out."

KENNEDY: "You personally have been figuring it out this year. At the time of this interview, you're tied for 2nd in the MINK League in strikeouts. You've got 30 so far. What's been working for you on the mound this season?"

CHAPMAN: "I've been really working on getting ahead on batters. I feel like I struggled with that in spring in school ball and whenever I get ahead, I have more success. So I've been working on that."

KENNEDY: "Talk to me about the look, man. You got the goatee rocking. What's with the new look this year?"

CHAPMAN: "My dad kind of has a goatee, so I kind of want to look like him a little bit, but that's pretty much it."

KENNEDY: "Can you speak to this year's pitching staff here for the Mustangs? You're one of the few returners from last year. What do you like about this staff and this group here?"

CHAPMAN: "Last year, I feel like we had a lot more top-heavy guys, and I feel like now whenever we start figuring it out and getting strikes in the zone, I think we're a pretty deep staff and we get good results."

KENNEDY: "You're transferring to Northwest Missouri State. A lot of guys on this roster are Bearcats, I mean, you mention Frank Gall, Jace Johnson and Gage Busby. To join this Bearcats staff that's already loaded. What's that like and to play for Tony Jandron, former Mustang?"

CHAPMAN: "It's super neat. I like all the guys a lot. I talk to Frank and Jace almost every day, so it's gonna be a fun transition. "

KENNEDY: "How do you want to keep progressing in college on the mound as a pitcher and just try to keep getting better and better?"

CHAPMAN: "I think a lot of it's like maturity. I think whenever I start maturing a little bit and start having more confidence, that'll start. It'll start making my outcomes a little better."

KENNEDY: "Now that you're two years into playing here at Phil Welch Stadium, what's been so special about playing in this stadium here?"

CHAPMAN: "The crowd, you can't beat it. We go everywhere else and there's maybe 200 people and we come here and I think our lowest is 2500. You just can't beat that."

KENNEDY: "We mentioned earlier about the 11th MINK League Championship. How do you guys pull that off? It's kind of top-heavy at the MINK league right now. There's you and Joplin and Clarinda and Carrol. How do you guys kind of get over the top and kind of rise above in the last half of the season here?"

CHAPMAN: "I think we just need to know that we're the Mustangs and know that we're better than everybody else. We need to kind of just play with that swagger a little bit."
