ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Optimum said its fiber-optic network was vandalized, leaving businesses and residents without internet service Thursday morning.

Optimum said the damage occurred near S 22nd Street and Southwest Parkway, and its team is currently working on repairs. A police report has already been filed.

Optimum said it experienced similar acts of vandalism that have affected network infrastructure in the same vicinity back in April 2026, making this a recurring trouble spot.

In a statement to customers, the company wrote:

“We sincerely apologize to our customers who are experiencing an internet service disruption. Our teams responded immediately and are currently working to restore service after our network was deliberately damaged by criminal activity. We appreciate our customers’ patience and urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.”

While copper is in high demand, Optimum's network doesn't contain any copper. The process to restore the fibers is very intricate; every strand must be spliced inside an enclosure that protects it.

Dozens of precise connections that are the size of a strand of hair have to be connected when a line is cut. Additionally, fiber optic cables are worthless when they are cut.

Optimum encouraged residents to stay alert for individuals working near the infrastructure and to report anyone who can't provide the proper credentials.
