Chiefs president gives update on new stadium

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Kansas City Chiefs are back in St. Joseph for training camp with the first day of practice kicking off on Wednesday.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan spoke to reporters and gave updates and insights into the new stadium that is expected to be done by 2031 in Olathe, Kansas.

One topic of discussion was where training camp will be in the future.

Donovan said the Chiefs will continue to be in St. Joseph for the next five years, but couldn't give an answer to where they will be once the new facilities are done.

"We absolutely view it as being with St. Joseph and being a partner with them for the next five years," said Donovan. "The training facility is going to be designed with the ability to host training camp. We have to have that option."

The Chiefs also have an interest in hosting big events. Donovan mentioned talks with the NFL about hosting the Super Bowl within the next decade and discussions have been had with the NCAA about hosting a Final Four.

"You think about the events we're talking about bidding for right now, 95% of them we wouldn't be able to bid on because we don't have an indoor stadium," said Donovan.

Head Coach Andy Reid showed his excitement on Wednesday for the new stadium and what it could do for the team and fans.

"From the coaches' standpoint, I think that it's a beautiful thing to get a new stadium," Reid said. "I think it's great for both Kansas and Missouri to get the opportunity to have a first-class stadium here."

The new $3 billion stadium is expected to be completed by 2031.
