Chiefs fall to Los Angeles Rams in first Preseason game but rookies show promise in first game
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs fell 20-12 to the Los Angeles Rams in the team's first Preseason game Saturday afternoon, but there were bright spots from this game for KC.
Rookies Emmett Johnson and Cyrus Allen, who both played each other at Arrowhead Stadium in college with Nebraska and Cincinnati, showed promise in their first games as pros for the Chiefs.
Johnson carried the ball 12 times for 59 yards and averaged 4.9 yards a carry. Johnson scored a 4 yard touchdown in the first half but it was called back by a Chiefs penalty. Allen caught 2 passes for 20 yards.
"Definitely it's surreal. I'm still learning and playing for the Chiefs. I'm still like looking at Pat (Mahomes) like damn it's Patrick Mahomes I'm around. So it's still surreal for me," said Allen.
"It was good a lot of learning lessons, a lot of things to learn from. But overall it's a good experience being out there with the teammates," said Johnson. "But unfortunately I wanted to get that win, so that's the part that I hate is losing."
Another rookie who shined was quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who finished 13-of-19 for 98 yards through the air his first game as a Chief.
"It was awesome, a blessing. This is something I've dreamed about since I was 6 years old. To be able to do it here in a place like Kansas City and this historic stadium and this atmosphere, it was really cool,"said Nussmeier. I had a lot of fun, obviously a learning experience and I'm excited to get a lot better."
Third year defensive back Jaden Hicks was all over the field on defense for the Chiefs, leading the team in tackles with 7, 5 solo tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Hicks also added a pass deflection.
"Definitely seeing new looks and we were tired of playing against our offense. It was definitely great out there to play someone else and get a new look," said Hicks. It was awesome (seeing the rookies), I was in their shoes at one point. It was good to see them ball."
The Chiefs will have 4 more days of Training Camp on MoWest's campus in St. Joseph from Monday, August 17th to Thursday, August 20th. The team will hit the road to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 2 of the Preseason on Saturday, August 22nd at 6:30 pm.
