ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- LaTonya Williams announced Saturday on her social media page that she has been terminated from her position as Executive Director of the Bartlett Center, effective immediately.

According to Williams, she was informed by phone Friday evening that the Bartlett Center Board of Directors had decided to end her employment.

She stated that the decision was made at the insistence of City Manager Mike Schumacher and at the direction of the City Council.

Williams said the termination comes amid ongoing financial difficulties at the Bartlett Center.

She stated that the organization has faced funding shortages for several months, leading to missed rent payments and an eviction notice from the city.

According to Williams, the board met with the city manager to arrange a payment plan, and a deal was reached to help the Center continue operating.

She said she was told she would not be part of the transition going forward.

Williams described the decision as politically motivated, stating her campaign for State Representative has made her a target.

She said the board acknowledged the political nature of the situation but felt constrained in its options.

In her statement, Williams said she is saddened and disappointed but not surprised.

She expressed gratitude to the staff and said she will continue supporting the Bartlett Center's children and families. She also stated she will remain on the campaign trail and is "more determined to fight" for the community.

Williams had served at the Bartlett Center for nearly ten years.
