Kenneth Walker scores twice, Kansas City holds the LA Chargers out of the end zone in win
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs came off the team's bye week by taking down the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Running back Kenneth Walker rushed for over 100 yards for the fourth time this season as K9 carried the ball 19 times for 128 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half.
"It's not surprising, like we've been going through it during training camp at OTAs, so that's kind of what you expect, the way these guys work up front and making my job and Emmett (Johnson's) job a lot easier. So we just gotta continue to go and execute."
The Kansas City defense, which had been without a sack since week 1, brought down Justin Herbert 4 times on Sunday, including once from second year pass rusher Ashton Gillote.
"It felt great. Obviously this summer we've been hunting up and we've been longing for it. Pressures are good, but that's not what we pride ourselves on," said Gillotte. "So putting a quarterback down is always obviously our goal. So today it felt good to just finally get back in that column."
"it was great to have the 4 sacks. That's a question I get asked the most from our friends in the media here. We're making up for lost time there with 4 sacks, and I thought that was impressive," said head coach Andy Reid.
The Chiefs defense also forced 2 turnovers, one on an interception by linebacker Jack Cochrane in the first half. The other was a forced fumble stripped by L'Jarius Sneed and Nick Bolton and recovered by Drue Tranquill in the second half.
"We talk about the division games counting twice and so you know this game means a lot to our team, means a little bit more to me too," said Tranquill, a former Charger. "So to hold them to six points against a really good quarterback is a good feeling."
Patrick Mahomes was 23-of-30 with 272 yards passing, no touchdowns and 1 interception. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy led the team with 7 catches for 73 yards in an injury riddled receiving room coming into Sunday.
"It's hard to be 5-0 in this league. Getting a win in this league is hard. Everybody's good. Everybody's got drafted in this league for a reason, so you can't take these for granted," said Worthy. "I feel like we're playing some of our best ball. We left some out there on the field, but can't be mad with a win."
