U.S. Route 71 J-Turn Installation

NODAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- Drivers traveling through Nodaway County have a safer route as of Friday. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) officially opened the newly constructed J-turn intersection on U.S. Route 71 near 340th Street on Friday, Oct. 23.

The project aims to eliminate the danger of cross-traffic collisions at the intersection. Previously, motorists attempting to cross or turn left onto the highway had to navigate multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic. The new J-turn design alters this pattern, requiring drivers from 340th Street to turn right and merge into the passing lane, where they can then safely execute a U-turn to head in their intended direction.

While the intersection is now open, drivers should be aware of ongoing construction impacts. Southbound U.S. Route 71 will be narrowed to one lane in the passing lane for the remaining stage of work, with an 11-foot width restriction in place. Northbound traffic will maintain both driving and passing lanes.

The overall project is expected to be completed by late November 2026.

MoDOT reminds drivers to stay alert in work zones. "All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change," the department stated in a release. "MoDOT asks drivers to work with us by always buckling up, keeping your phones down, slowing down and moving over in work zones."
