One charged in the killing of Savannah native Spiegel

Jackson County Detention Center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- Charges against 37-year-old Khyree L. Simmons were announced on Friday by Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson in the investigation of the killing of Savannah native Regan Spiegel.

The Kansas City Police Department arrested two men on Thursday, one of whom was revealed to be Simmons. He is now charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

The arrests are believed to be in connection with the information requested from the public on the gray vehicle.

According to investigators, Spiegel was seen on camera sitting on the sidewalk as the Altima pulled up next to her and honked its horn. She then reportedly stood up and walked toward the car. Investigators say a woman’s voice could be heard on video before Spiegel points east.

The county prosecutor said city camera footage helped identify the car and potential suspects. Simmons' mother reportedly brought him to the police station to turn himself in.

Simmons told investigators that he had shot Spiegel in the chest. He said she had “scared him” after she opened up a car door and sat inside the vehicle. He told investigators he did not mean to kill her, and also shared that she did not have a weapon or threaten him.

He also told investigators he did not stay at the scene or call 911 due to being a felon and being in possession of crack cocaine.

He was allegedly in the area to meet a woman to sell her narcotics; the woman was reportedly present when Spiegel approached the vehicle.

The woman was said to have gotten into the car, and Simmons drove her to a motel where she was sold the drugs. He then got rid of the gun and flushed a shell casing in the toilet.

Simmons remains in custody without bond.
