(CNN) — A woman carrying two knives stabbed two people in Times Square on Monday afternoon, killing one, before police officers shot and killed her.

The second victim, a 68-year-old man, was stabbed in his abdomen in what appeared to be a “random and unprovoked attack,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, though he is currently in stable condition.

Officers opened fire and shot the woman as she moved toward the officers with the knives in her hand, the official said. The victims and perpetrator were taken to a Bellevue Hospital, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

NYPD officers arrived at the scene near 42nd Street and 7th Avenue – the heart of Times Square – and found the knife-wielding woman after she had attacked her victims at around 4:30 p.m., the official said.
