Highland Community College’s Scottie Gold Initiative wins national NASPA Award

HIGHLAND, Kan. (KQTV) -- Highland Community College announced that its innovative Scottie Gold Initiative has been named the recipient of the 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Adult Learner Program Award by the NASPA.

The Scottie Gold Initiative was designed to support and reconnect adult learners who had not completed their degree. Eligible students may receive up to 12 credit hours of tuition-free, personalized advising, re-enrollment support and targeted financial assistance.

“Community colleges are uniquely positioned to change lives,” said Vincent Bowhay, president of Highland Community College. “The Scottie Gold Initiative reflects our belief that it is never too late to finish what you started. This award affirms our commitment to meeting adult learners where they are and helping them cross the finish line.”

The initiative has led to increased re-enrollment, renewed engagement across Highland’s nine-county service area and improved completion rates among adult learners. Many of the program participants are parents, working adults and first-generation college students balancing multiple responsibilities while pursuing their academic goals.

The recognition from NASPA places Highland among a select group of institutions nationwide, leading the way in adult learner success and strategic enrollment innovation.

The award will be formally recognized at NASPA’s national conference later this year.
