County Clerk projects higher turnout for General Election

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Voter turnout for the Buchanan County General Election is expected to exceed the 2022 mayoral General Election.

In the 2022 mayoral election, voter turnout was at 20.28%, with 2,204 registered voters. In February’s primary election, turnout was 10.48%, with 4,694 registered voters.e.

Buchanan County Clerk, Mary Baack-Garvey said the voter turnout for Tuesday's election is expected to be around 23%.

"I looked back at the last five April elections and the largest turnout out of those five is 26%. So I’m going to shoot for 23%, it’s kinda right in the middle of the lowest and the highest,” she said.

The courthouse has already received 400 mail-in ballots, and nearly 200 people have voted through absentee ballots in person, as of Friday.

Baack-Garvey shared tips on what voters should bring to the polls Tuesday.

"The number one thing they need to know is they need to have a Missouri driver's license, a non Missouri driver's license, a passport, any government issue id or a military ID," she said. "They all need to be photo."

The General Election will be held Tuesday, April 7. The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
