St. Joseph officers awarded Medal of Valor for response to armed carjacking incident

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri Police Chiefs Association awarded St. Joseph Police Department officers the Medal of Valor due to their actions during a critical incident in March of last year.

The Medal of Valor is the highest honor awarded to law enforcement in Missouri, recognizing extraordinary acts of heroism in life-threatening circumstances.

The officers responded to an armed carjacking. The incident involved two individuals firing weapons from a moving vehicle at officers in multiple areas of the city. The officers' actions showed the training and the commitment to protecting the public.

Those honored include Officer Derek Rice, Officer Jasmine Juares, Detective Nathaniel Stapleton, Detective Elliott Barton, Detective Justin McElroy, Detective Brandon Harrison, Detective Michelle Ritter and Capt. Todd Derr.

"Their actions reflect the highest standards of service and dedication to the community,” Police Chief Paul Luster said. “I could not be more proud of these officers. In a moment where lives were at risk, they acted with bravery, restraint and an unwavering dedication to protecting our community. We are grateful for their service, their professionalism and their willingness to face danger so others don’t have to.”

SJPD thanked the Missouri Police Chiefs Association for honoring the officers’ bravery and expressed appreciation for the community’s continued support.
