ST. JOSEPH (KQTV) -- The summer heat is here and residents may be seeing an increase in their electricity bills.

Evergy says that despite the warmer weather, there are ways that you can keep your costs down.

According to their website, make sure to be mindful of how you cook. Smaller appliances use less energy than a stove or an oven. Also, make sure to close your blinds and then check your door and window frames for any cracks or gaps where hot air could come through.

Courtney Lewis is a senior communications manager with Evergy and says people should look beyond just their thermostat when trying to cool down their homes.

"There are some simple things people can do like using fans to help cool rooms," said Lewis. "During the summer, that's really important. When you are not in a room, make sure to turn off your fans, because remember, fans cool people and not rooms."
