Longtime football, wrestling coach inducted into St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- When you think of high school sports in St. Joseph, especially football and boys wrestling, there are probably a few coaches that come to mind in the last 45 years. One of those coaches is now a member of the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Tony Dudik coached for a long time at Central High School and Bishop LeBlond High School, impacting hundreds of lives. And that is why he is one of the inductees in the 2026 class of the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.
"The process is as important as the outcome, and his process was always the right way," said Chuck Davis, Bishop LeBlond head football coach.
Dudik started coaching at Central in 1977 and was promoted to head football coach in 1987. He led the Indians' program for 23 years before taking over at Bishop LeBlond.
He mentored thousands of student-athletes in 45 years of coaching football and wrestling.
"He not only tries to teach you the fundamentals and the knowledge of the sport, but also as a human being," Former wrestler Craig Phillips said. "He cares where you proceed in life."
The Hall of Fame coach racked up 133 career football wins at Bishop LeBlond and Central with seven state playoff appearances, including Central's last district championship in 1995. He coached 44 All-State players and more then 100 of his players went on to play college football.
"His program was written all over my program (Lafayette), you know, from the weight room, even my three-step passing game, my rollout game," said Paul Woolard, a former player and assistant coach for Dudik. "When we ran our zone and what zone concepts we ran, it was based on stuff he did. Just seeing the way his brain could switch from 11-man to eight-man, the verbiage, the techniques, schemes. It was pretty cool to see."
Coach Dudik's wrestling teams won seven city championships and sent 53 wrestlers on to state.
"I can't talk to one individual that was coached by Tony Dudik that doesn't respect him for everything he did for them, not just in sports, but as a person," Phillips said.
Dudik was inducted into the Missouri Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011. Central High School inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2019, and in 2023, the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame inducted Dudik into its Hall of Fame.
