Persisterhood of St. Joseph hosts ballot breakdown panel ahead of November election

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Persisterhood of St. Joseph hosted a ballot breakdown panel, letting voters make informed decisions before casting their votes in November.

Organizers say this meeting was a non-partisan meetup where participants could learn more about November's ballot and make informed decisions before voting, with speakers who gave more information on ballot measures.

The Persisterhood suggested a certain way to vote for their supporters: yes on Petition K and Amendment 6, and a no vote on Amendments 3, 7, 8, and Proposition A.

The organization gave a breakdown of each initiative and reasonings as to why they're urging yes or no votes, such as Chelsea Howlett from the Noyes Home for Children urging a 'yes' vote on Proposition K to fund childcare for agencies across St. Joseph.

"I think voters should be informed. The ballot measures are really nonpartisan measures," said guest speaker Elizabeth Franklin. "I think voters should learn about them and then decide, because many of these ballot measures can appeal to people of different parties."

Making an appearance as another guest speaker was Tom Bastian, a representative from Stop the Ban Missouri, another organization that is fighting against Amendment 3's passing.

"We, in fact, put a citizen-led initiative petition forward and ended that ban and protected the right to reproductive freedom," Bastian said. "But now politicians are trying to overturn that work. They want to repeal the right to reproductive freedom, including access to birth control, safe birthing conditions."
