Congress approves national historic landmark designation for America’s National Churchill Museum

Westminster College

FULTON, Mo. (KQTV) -- Congress has approved legislation designating America's National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri, as a National Historic Landmark.

The Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent Tuesday afternoon, following House passage earlier this year.

It now heads to President Trump's desk.

The museum sits on the Westminster College campus, where Winston Churchill delivered his famous "Iron Curtain" speech in 1946.

Senator Josh Hawley shepherded the legislation through the Senate, calling it a huge win for Missouri.

The bill directs the Interior Secretary to establish the landmark designation and calls for a National Park Service study of the site.

"This church will stand on the campus of Westminster in Fulton, Missouri, blessed as a National Historic Landmark, to speak to the principles that are at the heart of the American experiment, and which we reaffirm in this 250th year, and which continue to shine brightly in the state of Missouri," Hawley said.

The passage comes in the 80th anniversary year of Churchill's historic address.
