Missouri voters to decide congressional map on Prop. A

KMIZ

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Missouri used the 2025 congressional map in the primary elections, but the state’s Supreme Court ruled that the 2022 map will be used for the upcoming midterm election. Now, voters will decide which map Missouri uses going forward.

Missouri Proposition A asks voters which congressional map the state will use in the future. A “no” vote keeps the 2022 map in place. A “yes” vote would put the 2025 map — also known as House Bill 1 — into effect.

If Prop. A passes, the biggest change would be in the Kansas City area. Kansas City is mostly in the 5th Congressional District under the current map. Under HB 1, Kansas City would be split among multiple districts.

Richard von Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians, says the 2025 map would take power away from voters.

“Proposition A is the map that was drawn in D.C. and brought to Missouri to rig our elections so that politicians and lobbyists in D.C. can decide which voters go in which district and who’s going to be guaranteed which election result,” von Glahn said. “We don’t think that’s the way things should work. We think voters should be empowered to choose their representatives.”

Byron Keelin, president of Freedom Principle of Missouri, sees it differently. He says the 2025 map levels the playing field and helps voters.

“What the old 6/2 map did was actually gerrymander a district to allow for an extra Democrat seat,” Keelin said. “What the 7/1 map does is actually gerrymander the 6/2 map and makes it more fair for the voters to get the representation that they need in Washington, D.C.”

Voters will decide on Prop. A in the midterm election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
