ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- St. Joseph Museums have been awarded a $15,000 grant to help with the creation of an outdoor interpretive trail.

Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) awarded a $15,000 grant to the St. Joseph Museums to support the project "Outdoor Interpretive Trail." The MHC is a statewide agency devoted to humanities education for citizens of all ages.

The new trail invites visitors to explore the heritage and presence of the Native Peoples of the St. Joseph area. The museum is collaborating with the Ioway, Sac and Fox and Kaw (Kansa) tribes to design interpretive signage that shares their histories.

The trail will feature native plants and educational panels that highlight traditional uses and ecological benefits. Outdoor seating areas where families can enjoy a picnic or where the museum can host community events will be included.

The project reflects the museum's ongoing commitment to honoring the history of the Native People who shaped the region.

The grant will fund the development of interpretive materials, landscaping and seating installation. They are planning to start working in September at 3406 Frederick Avenue.

The museum encourages the community to follow for updates on its website.
