Independence man faces multiple charges after a car chase and attempting to stab a deputy
CLAY COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- An Independence, Missouri, man is facing multiple charges after allegedly initiating a police chase and attempting to stab a Clay County Deputy Sunday morning.
Scott K. Adkins, 59, is behind bars after he was caught speeding and changing lanes without signaling around 3:00 a.m. Sunday, July 12, on Interstate 435.
The vehicle's licence plate was registered to another vehicle, and when the officer attempted to pull him over, Adkins fled.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The driver refused to exit the car and was acting erratically. Adkins kept reaching around the vehicle, which made law enforcement fear he was locating a weapon.
When law enforcement tried to negotiate with him to come out, Adkins refused.
While he was distracted by his phone, the deputy took the opportunity to break Adkins' window to extract him.
After repeatedly swinging a bag of mini donuts at the deputy, Adkins then thrust an extended box cutter at the deputy. The blade was avoided, and all the officers on the scene took a step back while the MSHP trooper worked on negotiations.
According to a release, the suspect started drifting in and out of consciousness and started stabbing himself in the abdomen.
A Platte County Missouri Sheriff's Office deputy was able to successfully deploy a Taser on the suspect, rendering him immobile.
An ambulance transported Adkins to the hospital, where it was determined he only experienced superficial wounds from the self-inflicted cuts.
Adkins is now in custody at the Clay County Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault on law enforcement, armed criminal action and aggravated fleeing from law enforcement.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office alleges Adkins may have been impaired by illegal narcotics. Potential DWI charges are possible pending lab results.
