YWCA to host multiple activities in October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The YWCA of St. Joseph is hosting several events in October to support survivors for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

From 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, the community is invited to "Hear My Voice" in the YWCA Terrace Room.

"Hear My Voice" will be an evening full of remembering victims, honoring survivors and standing beside those whose lives were affected by domestic abuse.

YWCA is also running a community art contest centered on the theme of "Give Your Pain A Voice." The contest is open to the public and invites people to use creativity to express their experiences.

Submissions may include paintings, drawings, poetry, music, photography, 3-D pieces, mixed media and other creative expressions. Submissions will be accepted from Aug 10 through Sep 25.

During "Hear My Voice", the YWCA will also present the Mary Jolly Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Victims and Survivors of Violence.

The award was created in 2010 in memory of Mary Jolly, a loved YWCA employee. Nominations for the award will open on Sept. 1.
