Meierhoffer celebrates Day of the Dead with St. Joseph’s Latin American community

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Meierhoffer Funeral Home offered their grounds for their first Día de los Muertos celebration on Saturday.

Food and craft vendors were invited, sharing different cultural experiences and festivities for Day of the Dead.

Additionally, there was a special dance performance from the Makawi Folklore Dance Group, featuring folk dresses and dancing, and an ofrenda from Meierhoffer.

The funeral home says they wanted to share a space to honor loved ones in their remembrance area and enjoy a welcoming afternoon mingling culture.

Attendees said they appreciate the work being done to honor Hispanic culture, and they hope that more events like this can come to St. Joseph to continue sharing Latin American traditions.

"For my culture from Puerto Rico, we don't have this day, but the Mexicans, for them, it's really important to celebrate the people that they lost and remember them and cherish them and eat stuff like pan de muerto," said Peyton Santana, a local vendor. "There's other things like pozole, other things that they eat on this day to celebrate and remember the people that they lost."

Attendees say you can celebrate Día de los Muertos by honoring lost loved ones and engaging with Hispanic communities to learn more about this tradition.
