SJSD School Board reviews facility usage for outside organizations

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) — The St. Joseph School District’s Board of Education took time Monday to discuss the district’s ability to allow outside groups to use its facilities.

Board member Mike Moore brought up the topic during the work session because a community member was concerned about the lack of gym availability.

Moore said the issue stemmed from elementary basketball, but he acknowledged that there are plenty more groups that have or might like to use the facilities in the future, too.

“I just view it as an opportunity for the district to be seen by the community as bringing some value,” said Moore.

The school district does have a policy in place for facility usage.

Director of Student Services Shannon Nolte shared the process for groups to use facilities.

He also suggested potentially getting a group together to go over policies for using district facilities.

Moore advocated that some of the guidelines should be amended to clear up any confusion about future district facility usage.
