South Harrison Girls Hoops repeats as C3D16 Champions

LATHROP, Mo. (KQTV) -- After fending off a late-game comeback by the Lawson Girls Basketball team, South Harrison defeated the Cardinals by a score of 43-42 on Friday night at Lathrop High School.

Leading scorers in double digits for the Lady Bulldogs were Lexi Hunter with 13 points and Brylee Sherrill with 12 points.

The Cardinals' efforts were led by Kamryn Florea with 12 points and Madi Cross with 10 points. Lawson Girls Basketball ends their season with a 21-8 record.

South Harrison’s Head Coach Kale Watson had faith in his team, powering back after almost letting Lawson take the game away with a comeback in the second half.

“I thought the third quarter we probably settled a little too much for the three ball, and then at the end, it just comes down to players making plays,” Watson shared. “They had their players doing the same thing. I thought we stayed pretty resilient. Showed a lot of grit late in the game, especially when things were kind of breaking down for us.”

For the Senior Sherrill, who was second in scoring, listening to her coach was what brought her and her teammates back to clinch it late.

“I think we were, like, freaked out, like, 'Oh no, we might lose'. But we really just calmed down and executed what our coach told us,” said Sherrill. “(Coach has) built us throughout the years to be who we are. He's really helped us to get to where we are today. Our other coaches really support him, and what he chooses to do, so he works hard for all of us.”

This is now back-to-back Class 3 District 16 Championship wins for South Harrison Girls Basketball. They'll take their 19-7 record to East Buchanan High School in Gower, Missouri, to take on Bishop Leblond at 6:00 pm on Monday, March 2.

Despite winning another district title, Coach Watson wants to see the offense that wavered near the end become steady before Monday’s game.

“We've got to take care of the ball a lot better. We're probably going to see some pressure. I'd probably pressure us if I were someone else. Just understanding that when we get pressure, we've got to settle in on the half court and find some easier looks than we probably got tonight at times.”

The Golden Eagles Girls Basketball team defeated Mid-Buchanan on Feb. 27 by a score of 31-25 to win the Class 3 District 15 Championship.
