Central boys volleyball changing the perception of the sport

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Central boys volleyball team is in year three since their first season in 2024, and are already competing with some of the best teams in Missouri.

Central senior AJ Whiteman is one player that had his assumptions about the sport, but had his mind changed once he started playing.

"At first, I was only a basketball player," said Whiteman. "Coach was trying to convince me and I was like 'that's a girls sport right?' I came out here and learned it's actually really fun."

Daniel McCamy has been the head coach since the program was instated at Central High School. This season, he has led the Indians to a 17-5-1 record and gave credit upperclassmen for laying the program's foundation and being leaders for the younger players.

"This group of seniors has meant a lot to this program," said McCamy. "They helped start it as sophomores so them having three years of experience is huge."

The Indians will be back at home on Thursday, April 23 as they face Park Hill at 6 p.m.
