ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph City Council adopted a resolution to support improvements for the pedestrian crossing on St. Joseph Avenue, near Lindbergh Elementary.

City Council approved a $248,120 contract at its Monday, June 8, meeting with RS Electric Utility Services.

The project will replace the existing hanging crosswalk signals on aging wooden pole infrastructure with a mast arm-mounted High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, or HAWK. The signal system is designed to improve safety and increase driver awareness in school zones.

Funding for the project will come from Fiscal Year 2026 River Bluff Gateway State American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

According to city documents, the River Bluff Gateway Project is intended to revitalize parts of St. Joseph's north side, including the area surrounding Lindbergh Elementary School.
