Chiefs Camp stayed outdoors despite Thursday rain

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- An overcast morning turned into a full-on rain shower near the end of practice Thursday as Chiefs Training Camp continued.

One of the players at the podium post-practice was Chiefs Wide Receiver Tyquan Thornton, who chose to return to the team in the offseason after testing free agency. Originally drafted by the New England Patriots in 2022, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024.

Thornton gave insight during Thursday's media availability on why he decided to return to KC for another season.

"I'll say just the history of the organization, man. They pay a lot of players to play football here, man," Thornton said under a rain-soaked tent. "Play at the highest level. And, obviously, Patrick Mahomes in working with Andy Reid and the coaching staff, one of the best coaching staffs in the league. So why not Kansas City? "

Another 2024 acquisition through the fourth round of the draft, Defensive Back Jaden Hicks. He spoke about his and the team's mentality in approaching this season after the team's disappointing 2025-26 NFL season.

"Definitely improving every day, each and every day. Getting the guys on the same page and just building a bond," Hicks told the media. "No matter where it goes throughout the season, we're together, and we're in it for one goal. "

One person specifically glad to see Hicks return is Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Coach Spagnuolo also spoke to the media after practice, which also included Center Creed Humphrey.

Spagnuolo is appreciative to have Hicks return because of his versatility; however, he knows he can stay in one spot.

"Jaden played a lot of different spots last year. I told him back in the OTAs, I'd like to find one that he can just hone in on and master that while we experiment with some of the other guys," Spagnuolo said Thursday. "But he is a guy that we have a little versatility with. A year ago or the last two years, that won't change. We'll just find out where he's going to get slotted in."

Chiefs Training Camp continues Friday, July 21, with the practice beginning at 9:15 am on the campus of MoWest. Fans can expect a Kingdom XP Video Gaming Pop-Up, along with autographs from the Defensive Backs.
