Chiefs complete first padded practice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Kansas City Chiefs were back on the practice field Monday after having the day off Sunday. It is now week two of camp, and the team was ready to bring out the pads.

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid loved what he saw from his team and wants to see this continue throughout camp.

"It's a great atmosphere out here, putting pads on the first day. Appreciate the effort that they put in," said Reid. "They challenged each other. If you continue to do that, then you have a chance to get better. We've got plenty of room to grow, but you've got to have the effort to be able to do that, and I appreciate that."

Chiefs Guard Trey Smith is entering his sixth season with Kansas City and lines up against one of the best every day of camp in Chris Jones.

"95(Chris Jones) is obviously a phenomenal player," said Smith. "Iron sharpens iron, and I'm going against the best, so it's gonna pay off in dividends when the season rolls around."

Smith wasn't the only one with this thought process. Defensive End George Karlaftis shared how he is approaching training camp.

"Iron sharpens iron, and this is what this period is for," said Karlaftis. "Ultimately, we're just trying to get better in every way we can."

The Chiefs will be back at MoWest's practice field at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
