(KING CITY, MO) - The King City High School boys basketball team defeated Rock Port 76-64 on Monday night.

In a battle of two teams receiving top 10 votes in Class 1, King City exploded out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Rock Port then came back in the second quarter to pull within 4 points.

But King City was able to maintain control in the second half and bring home the win. Sophomore Landon Carlson had a dominant night for the Wildkats, leading all scorers with 32 points. Junior Jonathan Garlock finished with 17 points for King City and sophomore Jax Jundy had 10.

For Rock Port, junior Jack Meyerkorth led the team with 29 points, followed by junior Brock Sebek-Holmes with 15.

"My teammates were seeing me well when I posted up, they gave me the ball and then even if I didn't get the ball that we were moving and we were getting things done," said Carlson. "I'm glad we're catching some momentum to get in the districts because it's a tough district, but I think we'll be fine."

"They haven't played a team quite like us in the way we can play defense when we play together, said King City head coach Chris McMillen. "I told the guys to come out, light a fire underneath them, get that intensity up, make them play faster and uncomfortable, and they did."

King City improves to 19-5 on the season and Rock Port drops to 19-6.

The Wildkats next play at North Nodaway on Tuesday, February 17th at 7:30 pm. Rock Port next hosts North Andrew on the 17th at 7:30 pm.
