Benton High School baseball rocks Chillicothe in battle of top 10 teams in Class 4

(ST. JOSEPH, MO) - In a showdown of two top 10 high school baseball teams in Class 4, #9 Benton took down #6 Chillicothe, 12-2 in 6 innings Wednesday night.

Freshman Carson Coy led the way, going 3-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBI, followed by senior Cy Polley who was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and sophomore Kendrick Elkins who finished 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Junior Zaidyn Woodward pitched a solid game on the mound for Benton, pitching all six innings and finishing with nine strikeouts while giving up four hits and two runs.

"It's huge for us, hopefully we can get the one seed out of this, that was our goal. But it's always a good game against Chilli and it's fun to play against them anytime, no matter what," said Woodward. "I had to mix in off-speed against that lineup and was able to keep them off balance. My defense made plays, so that was huge."

"We've been playing such tough competition all year. If you take a look at our record, you've seen all the gauntlet of teams we've been playing and our guys are just used to that now and you know they know that they've seen everything," said head coach Johnny Coy. "They've seen everybody's number one and so our guys are confident, building confidence as the year goes on. That's what we're all about here is playing the best teams possible and just building confidence and playing our best baseball hopefully at the end of the season."

Benton improves to 19-10 on the season and next faces Liberty on the road on Saturday, May 9th at 2:30 pm. Chillicothe drops to 17-7 and plays Lafayette next at Phil Welch Stadium on the 9th at 11 am.
