King City High School baseball shocks Maysville; wins first Class 2 District 16 Championship in school history

(MAYSVILLE, MO) - The King City High School baseball team made a massive statement on Wednesday night as the 2 seeded Wildkats shocked the 1 seed Maysville Wolverines 7-4 to win the Class 2 District 16 Championship.

It's the first district title in King City baseball history.

Maysville broke out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an error on a hit from senior Carson Bray. Then in the top of the 4th, Maysville committed 3 errors itself on 3 different plays, allowing King City to take a 3-2 lead.

That lead was added on even more in the 5th inning on a 3-run home run from senior Ryder Sample to make it 6-2 King City.

Maysville tried to come back. The Wolverines got an RBI single from junior Broden Willis in the 6th and a solo home run from junior Carter Harms in the 7th to pull within 3 runs. But Sample slammed the door with a strikeout on the mound to end the game as Maysville had 2 on base.

Senior Graham Medsker pitched a strong game for King City as well, going 5 innings with 5 strikeouts and only giving up 2 hits and 2 runs.

"This is what we wanted at the start of the season. We knew we had the group to have it and there wasn't a single guy not putting in effort at practice," said Sample. "We came there ready to work every day. Coach (Vance) Profitt's first year here, and we won a district championship. What does that say about him?"

"These boys...they're special. I put them through about 4 years' worth of putting up with me in a couple short months to get us ready for this position, and my goodness, they're just so much fun," said King City first year head coach Vance Proffitt. "They earned this. It's so awesome to see the looks on their faces that they get to be in this position."

King City improves to 15-5 on the season and will now host Faith Christian Academy in the Class 2 State Sectionals on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th. Time is TBD.

It's the first time in 5 seasons that Maysville didn't win the District Title, the Wolverines finish with a 22-8 record.
