Riverside High School freshman running back Charles Hewins breaks school’s single game rushing record

WATHENA, Ks. (KQTV) - Riverside freshman running back Charles Hewins, in his first game playing for the Cyclones, carried the ball 26 times for 339 yards and had 4 touchdowns last Friday in a 41-28 road victory against Jefferson County North.

Hewins' 344 yards rushing in a single game set a new school record for riverside! One game in and the freshman is already breaking records. 

"My offensive linemen are pretty good," said Hewins. "Just pick the gap and go through it."

On breaking the record, Hewins, a man of few words, was motivated for more.

"It means really nothing to me. I just have to go beat it again," said Hewins.

"The yardage is unheard of, it wasn't ideal for him to have that many carries. But when the backup running back goes down in the first quarter, it limited us," said Riverside head coach Bryce Paden. "We were trying to do things to keep (Hewins) fresh but it starts with the offensive line. Charles is not normal, but the guys up front really kind of led the way for him and gave him a big hole and then he made lots of plays after that."

Hewins and Riverside will have the team's home opener on Friday, September 11th against Oskaloosa at 7 pm.
