East Atchison High School girls cross country team wins Class 1 team title at state

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KQTV) - The East Atchison High School girls cross country team came home from Columbia with a Class 1 team title at state.

The Wolves finished with a score of 74 with St. Joseph Christian finishing in second place with 101.

East Atchison's highest finisher in the 5K race was freshman Mikayla Windham, who placed 7th in Class 1 with a time of 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

"This feels so surreal, I'm just so grateful I got to do it with this group of girls. We've worked really hard to get here so we're just super thankful," said Windham.

"From the get go from the start of the summer we've put in so many miles, so much hard work. Doing it really as a team all together, pushing ourselves, it's felt so great," said junior Taya Windham, who finished 14th with a time of 20:36.

"From where I started coaching, this seemed like an unreal outcome. So just going into this season even with the idea that we could be state champions seemed so foreign to me. But then we started to see those improvements over the summer, we started to see all the work they put in," said East Atchison head coach Kameron Schieffer. "Then when we ran that first meet this year it all just kind of came into reality, and now we're here."
